Alex Drake, Time Force trainee, had never once in his life argued with a superior officer. Until now. "You can't be serious, sir."

"I assure you I am," Captain Logan informed him. "Your instructors are agreed your people skills need work," probably because he'd been kind of freaking out the cadets coming in from the civilian sector with the intensity factor, "and that you could use some field experience." Telling him why he was getting field experience in this particular time period would only confuse the boy. "Therefore, you are to report for time travel first thing tomorrow morning."

"To go to summer camp," Alex said incredulously.

"To go to summer camp," Captain Logan agreed. "In the year 2008, on Fandom Island, of late of Virginia."

"What?"

"You'll understand when you get there. Don't worry too hard about breaking the timeline, this island is a special case. But some care will be needed. I expect you to remember your training."

"Of course, sir, but--but sir, I've been doing better with the other trainees. I can do better. You don't have to send me away." He was trying hard not to show it, but this, this was fear. He didn't know how to be anywhere else.

"You're going, cadet, and that's final." Captain Logan softened a bit. "You'll do fine. I expect regular reports. Dismissed. Go pack."

Alex Drake had never argued with a superior officer before. He didn't know why he'd tried it this time. It obviously didn't do any good. He sighed and headed back to the dorms to tell everyone who might care--by which he meant his roommate, whose name he could never quite remember and who would be thrilled, and the Scotts girl--and to pack. For summer camp.
